The band is called dispatch, the song is called the general. Before i try be insightful regarding this song, lets deal with the back story. About 6 or 7 monthes ago, I went to a dropkick murphys concert. It was my birthday, and i had a few friends come along. Now, somehow, maybe just stupidity, i miss-counted my friends and left one of the best ones hanging. I know, not the best move ever, but moving past that, I'm generally a pretty considerate guy so a say, "Ren, I'm sorry, i know i screwed up, what bands to you like that are still alive?". So were talking and Ren sends my a link to this band homepage. I ignore for a couple hours becausing, well, I'm talking to Ren, and who wants to serve the web when you can talk to Ren. Anyway, at some point during the conversation, I remember the link. I say "gee Ren, I didn't know you liked Distrubed". Keep in mind, Ren lives in a town for all practical purposes we'll call yachtcountrygolfclubland. She doesn't respond for a minute and then comes back all then sudden with a glaring "wtf?". "You know, Distrubed" I say, "the link you sent me". I scroll back to the link, click it, and sure enough, it says in large bold letters, Dispatch. Same first three letters, god, i think thats pretty good.
So this website will let you stream a majority of their last album from their website. I love this white-boy reggae stuff, so I'm hooked.
I say "Ren, whens the next concert?"
Turns out the lead singer died back in 05. Can musicians stop walking in front of buses? god. Just a little shout out, if anyone knows of a good show in the next couple monthes, live a comment.
I buy this album and hear the third song in. Its basically, anarchy at its best.
It begins with a strumming guitar solo and bogos, the bass guitar is light. THe lyrics detail the story of a general who is about to fight a great battle. Then comes the chorus, were the general disbands the army. "Take your shower and shine your shoes/ you a young man you must be living/ go now you are forgiven". The idea of armies deciding if they should fight, is an old one. In Republic Rome, armies functioned as autonomous powerhouses. Many armies since have done this, but an army, where every soldier chooses each act, the entire army making a wise informed decision on each battle, never. There would be no war, if soldiers chose the battles. People might fight more, but war? no more.
Anyway, great tune, I'll try to post it sooner or later.
